Sadly, Daniel De La Torre, a UCLA player for the Bruins from 2013 to 2018, passed away at the age of 29. De La Torre, a California native from Alhambra, left a lasting influence on both the university’s track and field team and other individuals. Those who knew and loved him are in deep sadness following his unexpected departure.

Morrison UCLA Director of Track & Field/Cross Country. “He had such contagious energy, and I will forever cherish every moment that I was fortunate enough to spend with him. We mourn his loss with the UCLA community; our hearts go out to his family and friends at this difficult time.”
Education and Sports
De La Torre was an inspiration of optimism and tenacity, not just an athlete. He made a substantial contribution to the track and field program, and everyone who knew him will always remember him as a devoted competitor and encouraging teammate. In addition to his athletic accomplishments, De La Torre had a strong interest in teaching. He was a well-liked educator at South Pasadena’s Almansor Academy, an all-special education school. De La Torre’s recent achievements demonstrated his commitment to running. After an outstanding showing at the 2023 California International Marathon in Sacramento, where he finished in 2:17:32, he earned a spot in the U.S. Team Olympic Trials for 2024. His charity was equal to his athletic abilities, as he raised money for his kids’ curricular improvement through marathon running.
